Last night’s thunderstorm did not deter me from attending Beth-Hark Christian Counseling Center, Inc.’s 30th anniversary benefit at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows Park, NY, at the invitation of  my friends, Denise Burse Fernandez and her husband Peter Jay Fernandez. The pair, who have been active members of Bethel Gospel Assembly, Inc. for eight years, hosted the festivities.

The evening was a celebration of the Harlem-based Beth-Hark Christian Counseling Center, Inc. which has served more than 26,000 men, women and children annually in New York City for 30 years. Whether experiencing food insecurity, homelessness, or some other life challenge, Beth-Hark’s goal has been to empower each individual and offer what  he or she may need to experience a brighter tomorrow.

During the cocktail reception and silent auction, guests enjoyed the vocal stylings of Edolene Bouey. During dinner, Johnny Mercier & Company’s jazz combo played, in addition to two dramatic performances.

Denise Burse Fernandez was at the helm of Cori Thomas’ powerful play about breast cancer, Waking Up, featuring MaameYaa Boafo and Alana Barrett-Adkins, which tells the story of two women, one in Africa and one in The USA, who both end up with breast cancer. Although they don’t know each other and have never met, their experiences are parallel, albeit very different and very alike in surprising ways.

Later in the program, Jahzeel Campbell, Paul Anthony and Oscar Bruce performed spoken word piece entitled, #FoodForThought.

Gerald A. Fernandez, President & Founder of The Multicultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance (MFHA) was the keynote speaker of the evening.
