Gotta Dance stars André De Shields and Lori Tan Chinn (“Orange is the New Black”), Garth Kravits (The Drowsy Chaperone), composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, Bonnie and Clyde, The Scarlett Pimpernel) and his wife Yōka Wao, John Manzari (Tappin’ Thru Life), Mandy Gonzalez (In the Heights, Wicked, “Madame Secretary“), Claybourne Elder (Bonnie and Clyde), Constantine Maroulis (Jekyll & Hyde, Rock of Ages), Sabrina Weckerlin and more attended the 6th annual “Broadway Watches the Oscars” party at HENRY’s in New York on Oscar Sunday. Chef Dave Ferraro prepared an à la carte menu as well as a prix fixe Three Course Oscar Supper.
Henry Rinehart and Broadway Director/Choreographer and HENRY’s regular Jeff Calhoun (Newsies!, Big River, Tappin’ Thru Life) co-hosted the evening and feted Broadway’s own Andy Blankenbuehler, award-winning choreographer of In the Heights and Hamilton, with a number of artists singing in tribute to him.
Andy Blankenbuehler is the award-winning choreographer of Hamilton. He received the Tony Award, the Outer Critics Award, Drama Desk Awards, the Lortel and Calloway Award for Best Choreography for his work in the Broadway hit In The Heights. His choreography has also been seen on Broadway in in the musical Bring It On, 9 To 5 (Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics nominations), the revival of The Apple Tree (starring Kristin Chenoweth), The People In The Picture (Roundabout), Annie. Other work includes the world premieres of Hamilton at the Public (Drama Desk, Lortel, Obie Awards), Fly (DTC), A Little Princess (Andrew Lippa), the West End musical Desperately Seeking Susan, The Wiz (City Center Encores!) and Joseph…Dreamcoat (U.S. tour). On television, his choreography has been seen on “The Sopranos,” MTV, and commercials for Wendy’s, Saturday Night Fever, and The History Channel. He has been a guest choreographer on “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Andy has staged concert work for Elton John, Bette Midler, and he directed, choreographed and co-conceived the hit Caesars Palace production Nights On Broadway. He has performed on Broadway in Fosse, Contact, Man of La Mancha, Saturday Night Fever, Steel Pier, Big, Guys and Dolls, as well as the touring companies of West Side Story, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music Of The Night, and Guys and Dolls. Upcoming projects include Bandstand (Paper Mill) and Only Gold with British singer/songwriter Kate Nash and the ABC small screen remake of Dirty Dancing.
